about

Dark Ambient/ Drone

Part 1 of The Introspective Trilogy (RIFT, Anhedonia, Diminish)

It started as isolated dreams, a few times a year. A darkness impenetrable by light. My surroundings illuminated by a strange glow but only enough to reveal a world that merely mimicked places I called home. In the darkness, ghoulish beings walked among me. They looked like my family members, but only a shell of what they used to be.

It was always the same. I would linger in this place, my darkened home, and in the end I would try to leave. Every time, I would get into a junk car and try to drive it away. Sometimes it wouldn't start. Other times it felt like it would fall apart on my journey. But one thing was for certain, I had a long way to travel in that darkness.

And this dark dream, it always had this underlying feeling, this tone. It was bleak, and heavy. I would some times carry it out with me when I awoke in bed the next day.

As time went by in the real world, the dreams occurred more often. Always in the same place, but with different interactions with the ghouls. But that underlying tone was present. Haunting me.

Finally, there came a time in my life after many years of battling depression and poverty, and my family having suffered through much illness and loss, that my life started to mimic the dream. That tone, that unmistakable tone, was present during all my waking hours. As if a rift had opened and conjoined the two worlds. Everything was dark, and there was little light to penetrate that darkness.

I could no longer distinguish dream from reality. When I closed my eyes to sleep, it was the only dream in which was dreamt. And when I opened my eyes the dream remained.
